The practice of Exercising: make Exercise a habit

I want to start this article off asking you to take few seconds to answer this question:

What is ONE thing that you have achieved in your life that you feel extremely proud of?

After that, take a few more seconds to choose THREE actions that would best describe what you had to do to accomplish that.

Was any of those three words PRACTISE? What I’m going to tell you in this article, will help you to make Exercise a habit and I have the perfect story to share with you.

There’s a new gym in the Northern Beaches area, specialized on high intensity group classes, and the other day I was walking past it, and it caught my attention one of the promises they have displayed big on their windows:

“Never do the same workout”

As a Personal Trainer I thought: Why would you want your clients to never do the same workout? This is similar to the parent whose kid is learning to read, would you not read your child’s favourite book over and over again? Or take the case of the student who needs to sit for the HSC examinations, would you not study again and again the subjects that need attention? What about the professional who wants to become the best salesperson in the company, would you not relentlessly sell?

This comes down to the fact that the Fitness Industry is lying to us and we believe it! Unfortunately, many of the big fitness brands don’t care about you, why would they? They just want to make sales, and let’s be honest, it’s sounds more attractive if I sell you the idea that you are going to get rid of those extra kilos by doing different exercises every time you show up and it will never be boring, but the reality is, that is just an illusion.

As a matter of fact, you might lose those extra kilos at the start, but at what cost? Exercise is like any other skill; you need to practise it to get good at it. Surely, if you don’t practise it, you will be terrible at it and be likely to get injured. If you believe it doesn’t need to become a practice or a habit, like washing your teeth is, then you will bounce the weight back, retake old habits and create a negative relationship with your journey.

But the truth is, real changes don’t come overnight, on in one week or six months. Exercise is a long-life practice and it’s not different from other areas of your life, because for anything  exceptional that you’ve achieved in your life, you had to work hard to get it, right? And I know what you are thinking:

“I don’t want to be an athlete or a Personal Trainer, I just want to…

…lose weight.

…be stronger for my kids.

…age well and live longer.”

Whatever your goal is, I’m confident you would like to stay fit for as long as you can, so why taking the short path, why taking a temporary “solution”?

Here’s what you can do instead: pick an exercise you enjoy doing, PRACTISE, PRACTISE and PRACTISE. Remember those things you do every day; those are the most important things you do. Practice it continuously and that will lead you to a long-life habit, and this is what I believe will happen: you will live a healthier, longer, and happier life.
